Carbonated, non-alcoholic water-based flavoured beverage which contains caffeine and may contain carbohydrates, amino acids, vitamins and other substances, for the purpose of enhancing mental performance. Includes products such as Red Bull and V. Composition may vary according to brand.

The majority of nutrients including proximates, vitamins and minerals were derived from individual and composite samples of 8 purchases of 2 brands (7x Red Bull, 1x V) of energy drink purchased nationally in each state and territory capital city (2008 - KFP). Caffeine was derived from the individual analysis of 10 brands of energy drinks purchased in Victoria in 2002 (Vic Dept of Natural Resources & Environment, 2002). Fatty acids and cholesterol were imputed as 0.
